Groundwater level of Punjab
Importance of water:-
Water plays an essential role for every living thing. It is used to do many things in regular life such as irrigation, washing clothes, drinking, etc. It also helps to maintain temperature levels as well as keep our bodies fit. Without water, we can't think to survive for a minute.

Punjab is part of India. It means land of five rivers It is also known as the gold bird. The groundwater level of Punjab is decreasing day by day. It is a matter of concern. According to the report of Hindustan time, the water level of Punjab is going down 1m every year. Because overuse of water is increasing.
Reasons behind the low Groundwater level of Punjab:-
There are a plethora of reasons for the low groundwater levels of Punjab:-
- The water for irrigation is more used than the available quantity for crop production.
- Massive pumping of groundwater due to free electricity bill.
- People are not aware of about the importance of water.
- Mostly every farmer is dependent on wheat and paddy crop. Wheat and Paddy crops is demanding a large quantity of water. Farmers also do not have proper information about the other crops.
Effects of low groundwater level:-
- If the groundwater level is low. we have to pump water from the depths of the earth.
- Lack of groundwater will cause lakes, ponds, and rivers to start drying up.
- If the groundwater level is low. It will increase the cost of electric power.
Initiative to save groundwater level of Punjab:-
- Replace the open irrigation water supply system with an underground pipeline. It helps to save 30% water.
2.Rainwater harvesting:-
- Build rainwater harvesting where the rainwater can store easily and be used for irrigation.
- Rebuild ponds in the village to increase water holding capacity.
3. Spread underground pipeline to use water from sewerage treatment plant:-
- Reduce the stress on groundwater.
- This method is also helpful to use treated water for irrigation.
- Farmers are dependent on other sources of irrigation.
